Let’s talk about a mental gear they don’t teach in schools. One that doesn’t get you applause or likes, but will save your life when everything falls apart. I call it:

Embrace the Suck.
That moment when you hit rock bottom and there are no feelings left. No more complaining. No more reaching for sympathy. Just you, the storm, and the grind forward.
Some men panic when the struggle comes. Others go deeper. They lock in. They start breaking records. They find peace in chaos. They don’t whine, they work.
My First “Realized” Encounter with “The Suck”
The first time I experienced this mental phenomenon was in basic training. There were days I wanted to quit, cry, vanish—but something in me flipped. I stopped resisting and started embracing.
Whether it was the blistered feet, the sleepless nights, or being chewed out in formation, I accepted the moment fully. I stopped hoping for easier and just got harder.
I don’t have scientific data to back this up. This is purely experiential. But I know what I saw. I know what I felt. And my battle buddies saw it too. Something shifts in your spirit when you fully commit to moving forward despite the pain.
Truth is tho, this was not the first time I had to endure a struggle, it’s the first time I was able to endure and accept on my own terms.
Fraternity Intake: Another Test
I saw it again during my membership intake process in my fraternity. Long nights, tough tests of discipline and mental strength. I hit that same wall. And once again, I embraced the suck.
It wasn’t about proving myself to others. It was about proving to myself that I could carry my name, my purpose, my weight—no matter what.
Life Falling Apart? Same Energy.
Over the last three years, I’ve faced fires most people never see.
- Helping students thrive while my personal life collapsed
- Watching a marriage fail despite giving everything I had
- Packing up what was left of my life and rebuilding from scratch
I did it all while still showing up for others, mentoring, teaching, creating, leading. But behind the scenes, I was embracing the suck every single day.
There was no applause. There was no roadmap. But I kept moving.
What Does It Mean to Embrace the Suck?
It means:
- Taking full accountability for your life
- Owning what happened to you AND what you did to yourself
- Accepting that nobody’s coming to save you
- Getting up every day and grinding forward anyway
You may not have caused the storm, but you still have to row the damn boat.
Like throwing water out of a sinking ship, we don’t sit there and cry. We bail water and ride out.
Final Word
There will be a moment in your life when everything crashes.
- No safety net.
- No easy fix.
- No one to lean on.
That’s when you tap into this gear. No pride, no shame. Just discipline, movement, survival, and purpose.
If you’re there right now, I see you. If you haven’t been yet, you will. And when you get there? Embrace the suck and become the kind of man this world can’t break.
Keep going.
