The ASCA model — Define, Manage, Deliver, Assess — has long been a framework for effective school counseling. It inspired me, Mr. Justin H. Tucker, to design a model tailored to the unique needs of the young men I mentor.
JustINSPIRE Mentoring Model

I call it: Distinguish, Steward, Discern, and Convey — four steps that make up the JustINSPIRE Mentoring Model.
This model comes from my lived experience as a School Counselor, Career Counselor, College Advisor, First Lieutenant, a Black man fighting to achieve and survive, and a Black boy who once just wanted to be heard in his own voice — not spoken for by someone else’s intention.
I created this framework so that our work with young men is intentional, authentic, and personal — never a one-size-fits-all approach, never just “going through the motions.” Too often, people pander. Even to me. But if you choose to spend time with me and commit to a plan with me at your side, know this: I am intentional in all my efforts.
1. Distinguish
ASCA says “Define” — set the standards you operate under, outline the knowledge, attitudes, and skills students need, and know your ethical guidelines.
At JustINSPIRE, we go further. We Distinguish the standards of communication and purpose between not only the mentee but the mentor as well. This relationship should benefit and grow everyone privileged to be part of it. True mastery of a mentoring relationship requires intention. It must be authentic. It must be unique. Sometimes clarity takes time — but once it comes, it becomes the foundation on which everything else is built.
2. Steward
ASCA’s “Manage” focuses on organization and administration — creating action plans, identifying needs, setting calendars, and forming advisory councils.
We replace “Manage” with Steward because we’re not running a business transaction — we’re nurturing people. Managers control for short-term goals. Stewards provide long-term, responsible care for people, ensuring their well-being and sustainable future. This is why we continually find creative ways to build with the community and form bonds that give mentees and mentors added support, resources, and a safe place to grow.
3. Convey
ASCA’s “Deliver” means providing services — counseling, instruction, collaboration — in ways that meet students’ academic, social-emotional, and career needs.
At JustINSPIRE, we Convey — not just deliver. We meet our mentees where they are:
- One-on-one in person
- Small group sessions
- Community events that bring everyone together
These aren’t just services. They’re opportunities to directly engage, to listen, and to respond with care. I use my educational background, professional skills, research, and continuing education to create innovative ways to meet and support young people through mentoring.
4. Discern
ASCA’s “Assess” focuses on data — measuring program effectiveness through numbers and outcomes.
At JustINSPIRE, we Discern. We actively assess the work, but we also recognize what data can’t always show. To discern is to perceive what’s subtle or hidden. For example, a mentee may fail a test multiple times, but their score steadily improves — the data might still say “fail,” but we see the growth and resilience building beneath the surface.
Discernment means valuing the human story behind the numbers, recognizing progress others might overlook, and adjusting our support accordingly.
This is how we created intentional mentoring — four steps designed to meet young men where they are, help them grow into who they’re meant to be, and keep our work personal, impactful, and rooted in respect.
