A new chapter in the fight against HIV has begun.
This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gilead Sciences’ long-acting Yeztugo, a twice-yearly antiviral injection that has the potential to revolutionize HIV prevention — particularly for communities most at risk.
In two landmark clinical trials completed in 2024, Yeztugo proved remarkably effective, virtually eliminating new infections when taken every six months. Unlike daily PrEP pills or the every-other-month GSK injection, Yeztugo only needs to be administered twice a year — a game-changer for real-world accessibility and adherence.
🔬 Why It Matters
The approval of Yeztugo is more than a scientific breakthrough — it’s a social one.
We know the barriers. Stigma, inconsistent access, and systemic disparities often prevent those most vulnerable from accessing consistent HIV care. The idea of taking just two shots a year instead of 365 pills offers not only medical ease — but a new chance at equity.

🚨 But There’s a Catch:
The celebration comes with concern. The Trump administration has proposed significant cuts to HIV prevention funding, threatening the very infrastructure needed to distribute Yeztugo equitably.
These cuts could jeopardize outreach, education, and the free or low-cost availability of this powerful new tool — especially in underserved communities already facing disproportionate HIV rates.
If we are serious about ending the epidemic, then prevention must be funded, accessible, and prioritized, especially for Black men, trans youth, and others statistically marginalized by traditional health systems.

- Discreet & stigma-reducing: A shot every 6 months avoids daily reminders or judgment.
