By J.H. “Inspire” Tucker, Purpose Development Professor
Baltimore is a city with incredible history, powerful culture, and limitless potential — but for many families, especially those raising young men, it has also become a place of deep concern and frustration.
Once again, decisions made by the Baltimore City School Board have left parents, educators, and community members shaking their heads. And for me personally, the impact has been more than inconvenient — it has been life-changing.
I’ve had my professional journey disrupted, my stability shaken, and my sense of purpose challenged in ways I never expected. And the toughest part is this:
If adults are struggling to navigate this system…
what do you think our boys are going through?
Distractions Everywhere, but Our Boys Are Still Overlooked
I’ve had teachers in my inbox sending messages about national politics — conversations about Trump, national elections, or cultural debates happening miles away. Yet my first response is always the same:
“Baby… what about what’s happening right here?”
What about the challenges our boys face every day in their own neighborhoods, their own classrooms, and their own minds?
What about:
- The lack of safe spaces
- The absence of consistent male role models
- Identity confusion
- Academic disengagement
- Emotional stress
- Limited access to meaningful opportunities
Baltimore City is a tough place for a young man trying to build purpose, discipline, and identity. And if we’re honest, many boys — especially Black boys — are navigating environments that work against their growth rather than for it.
If You Have a Son in Baltimore, You Need a Plan
If I had a son in this city today, I would be highly intentional about his environment and exposure.
I would be:
- Investing in a strong mentoring program
- Planning purposeful events and trips for social development
- Creating spaces for identity, confidence, and discipline
- Considering homeschooling or hybrid education
- Building a community of positive male influence
Not because schools are failing everywhere — but because the system is stretched thin, inconsistent, and not designed to protect the mental, emotional, and spiritual development of our boys.
Meanwhile, programs and resources for young girls are growing (which is beautiful), but the same level of support is not consistently available for boys.
And they need it — urgently.
This Is Why I Built JustINSPIRE Mentoring LLC
The work I do is not just a business. It is a calling.
The curriculum I created — The 6 Circles to Purpose™ — exists to give boys and young men what the world has failed to consistently provide:
- Direction
- Identity
- Discipline
- Community
- Exposure
- Purpose
Young men today are fighting battles in silence.
Many are being shaped more by social media and survival than by mentorship and vision.
That’s where we come in.
