For years, I’ve been committed to creating real conversations that bridge the gaps between brotherhood, mentorship, and street life. Too often, we hear about these topics from people who only studied them in a book or read about them online. Rarely do we get the chance to hear directly from those who lived it, survived it, and still carry the wisdom forward.
That’s why I’ve started a new series of conversations with my childhood friend, Tony. Together, we’re tapping into the Source — firsthand accounts, lived experiences, and raw truth about gang life, survival, and the choices that shape us.
We’ll be bringing this series to life through a mix of shorts and long-form content, capturing our talks live from the front porch — the place where so many real conversations happen.
A Conversation with Tony: Education, Truth, and Survival
In one of our most recent talks, Tony and I dug deep into topics that go far beyond street life. We explored:
- Education – the hidden knowledge within the system, and how much of the truth never makes it to the classroom.
- Banned Books – what it means when society decides certain knowledge should be off-limits, and how that impacts growth and freedom.
- Religion – the search for truth, the role faith plays in our lives, and the power structures it often upholds.
- Prison Power Dynamics – how control is enforced, and why knowledge becomes the greatest form of empowerment behind bars.
- Mentorship and Community – why investing in others matters, and how a strong circle can change outcomes.
- Gang Culture & Origins – the “who, what, and why” of how gangs form, survive, and evolve over time.
- Parenting & Youth – how environment, empathy, and guidance (or the lack of it) shape the paths young people take.
- Education vs. Trade Skills – and why having multiple pathways out of difficult situations is crucial.
Why This Matters
These aren’t conversations you’ll find in a textbook or a lecture hall. They’re lived truths. They’re accounts of survival, pain, and resilience that reveal both the dangers and the possibilities within our communities.
The goal isn’t just to tell stories — it’s to spark dialogue, inspire change, and offer mentorship and perspective to the next generation.
As Tony shares, I’m reminded that the most powerful way to learn is to listen deeply. To understand not just the choices made, but the environments that influenced them. Brotherhood means taking that understanding and turning it into action — for ourselves, and for those coming after us.
